Emigrant Database

373 emigrants · 18291865 · 12 ships

This is a database of nearly 400 Black Americans who emigrated to Liberia from Lynchburg, Virginia, and surrounding counties from 1829 through 1865, when a large group left Lynchburg and Virginia just after the Civil War.

Out of Virginia: Black Americans’ Search for Freedom in Liberia in the Nineteenth Century (University of Virginia Press, 2026) tells their stories.

If you have ancestors from Lynchburg, Campbell, Bedford, Amherst, Franklin and Nelson—or family connections to Liberia—you may find a connection here. You can search by name, or browse by home county/city, year born, year of emigration, or voyage. Select anyone to see additional information about them, as well as what happened to them in Liberia and who enslaved them in Virginia.

This work was inspired by and based on the Virginia Emigrants to Liberia project at the University of Virginia, supplemented by my own years of research. If you find an ancestor or relative here, I’d love to hear from you at stinnett@gmail.com. The database is also a work in progress, so let me know of any mistakes or additions.

On Roanoke ship’s list, Dec. 29, 1832, from ACS files. "Brig Roanoke, 4 Jan 1832, Norfolk, Virginia", Subject File, 1792-1964, American Colonization Society Records, Manuscript Div., Library of Congress; digital image, Fold3.com. Microfilm Reel 314 (https://www.fold3.com/image/46670402 : accessed 17 Feb 2021).The Leftwiches Roanoke ship list is dated Dec. 31, 1832. Another source says they arrived on Jan. 4, 1833. (Another group of Leftwiches from Salem emigrated in 1856.) The 1832-33 African Repository only says the Roanoke arrived safely amid a time of shortages in the colony. (P 17-18, search on Roanoke) No references to Leftwich or Bedford though. P348 says about 100 emigrants on board Roanoke; 27 were freed slaves; Rev. Pinney, well-known colonizationist, also aboard. P. 365 says 127 aboard and 100 were slaves freed to emigrate.Pinney letter in April 1833 AR p 60 says he thinks Roanoke emigrants may have come with the proper spirit of helping Africa not prospering by trade. Says few of the emigrants want to farm. Amazing letter, his first trip to Liberia, says he might walk to Boatswain’s town which he thinks is 150 some miles away. Much about color discrimination by emigrants even though some of them are darker than some people. May 1833 AR p119-120 says 127 emigrants aboard Roanoke, sent to Caldwell, ship lacked sufficient supplies, from Mechlin I think. Says they were sent to Caldwell receptacle, crowded. I searched the rest of 1833 and found no further references to the Roanoke. Vol 9-10 1833-34 seems to include all this. — also in this vol, p220, letter from William Reynolds also from the Roanoke, says all is well except not many are farming. P 439 says one Roanoke emigrant returned later that year. P 3 (439) annual report, says high mortality among emigrants from Roanoke and other ships.

    Notes · Author’s research

Washington Copeland's 1860 letter refers to getting his former enslaver Samuel Miller to pay for emigrants. Miller emancipated Anthony Scott and Cinderilla Scott who emigrated on the Cora in 1855. (AR31 [December 1855:379).Much detail on this group of emigrants, provided by Rev. John Seys, on the voyage of the Cora, and several other state ACS agents — it was the lead item in the December edition of the AR. Although a lot of people were aboard ship, it was apparently only half of less of those who had originally signed on, or been signed on to go. In fact, not clear if anyone went whose way was not paid by the colonization society — finances cited as a main reason. But certainly the black opposition to colonization, as well as the abolitionist newspapers, had an effect in dampening the spirit. Says this is a companion voyage to that of the Sophia Walker in 1854, which carried the Davis family of Amherst and others.
